Choosing a stairlift can sometimes be a confusing process. It is important to understand what factors are involved and questions to ask before you proceed.
It’s advisable that the stairlift covers the whole staircase. You may be tempted to save costs by installing a straight stairlift on a curved staircase and attempt to manage the first or last few steps yourself. However, if your condition deteriorates, you may no longer be able to manage this.
Are you able to bend your knees sufficiently to travel in a seated position as this will affect your travelling position?
Limited mobility may mean that you/the user may have to perch rather than sit on the seat. If perching is required/preferred, we must ensure that there is sufficient headroom when the stairlift travels up the stairs. We will undertake a full site survey before you purchase and take your requirements and preferences into full consideration when advising which lift will best suit your needs.
Who will operate the stairlift and how?
Will you/the user be able to operate the standard controls of the lift, usually push button controls sited on the end of the armrest, or is an alternative method required, for example a joystick or toggle control? Lifts can also be operated by remote control this will to allow others to operate the lift for the user if required. Our fully trained Stairlift Engineers will give full user demonstrations to all necessary parties on completion of installation to ensure that users and other members of the household are fully confident and competent to use the lift before we leave site.
The home environment:
We will need to consider position of doors, thresholds, banister rails, newel posts and radiators that are on or near to the staircase. Our survey will highlight any of these issues and we will be able to suggest ways in which to accommodate or work around them.
Other users of the stairs:
Consideration may need to be paid to children, pets, regular visitors and other members of the household. Will they be able to easily use the stairway when the lift is folded against the wall if needed?
